Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

With all the benefits of index funds and the flexibility to buy and sell on the ASX, ETFs are a cost-effective way to diversify a portfolio.

Learn more about ETFs: what they are, how they work and what they cost.

Important notes about ETFs

Generally only Authorised Participants, that is, persons who have entered into an Authorised Participant Agreement with Vanguard, can apply to create and redeem ETF securities directly with Vanguard.

Other investors must buy and sell ETF securities on the secondary market through the ASX, with the assistance of their broker or adviser. In doing so, the investor will incur brokerage and may pay more than the net asset value price when buying and receive less than the net asset value price when selling.

All ETF products are subject to market risk which may result in possible delays in repayment and loss of income and capital invested.

None of The Vanguard Group, Inc., including Vanguard Investments Australia Ltd, or their related entities, directors or officers gives any guarantee or assurance as to the performance of, or the repayment of capital or income reinvested in, the Vanguard ETFs. Members of The Vanguard Group, Inc., and its related entities, may invest in, lend to or provide other services to the ETFs. Vanguard has sufficient working capital to enable it to operate the ETFs as outlined in the PDS.

NAV price

The NAV Price is the value of the fund's net assets relating to the portion of assets that form part of the ETF class of units, divided by the number of ETF units. All NAV Prices will be shown in Australian dollars except for the cross-listed NAV Prices which are in US dollars. A NAV Price will only be available whenever the relevant exchange is open for trading. Accordingly, Vanguard will not strike a NAV Price for the Australian ETFs when the Australian Securities Exchange ("ASX") is not open for trading; for a list of non-trading days on the ASX please see ASX Trading Calendar*. Similarly, Vanguard will not strike a NAV Price for the US Cross Listed ETFs when the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") is not open for trading; for a list of non-trading days on the NYSE for the please see NYSE Calendar*. For upcoming market closures affecting the availability of the Net Asset Value (NAV) for VGE, please see important notice.

For International Shares ETFs, Vanguard will not strike a NAV price when markets are closed in relevant countries.

The Domestic NAV Prices are usually published between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST the next business day.

The final NAV price for VGE is expected to be available between 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EST the next business day.

Explanation of the "status" description used in the Prices information

The following terms used in the "status" column of the Prices information have the following meanings:

FINAL - The final transaction price for the stated business day, available when the primary market is open for that business day. For domestic ETFs the final NAV is usually published by 10am (AEST) on the following business day. For international ETFs the final NAV is usually published by 3pm (AEST) on the following business day.

INTERIM - An indicative NAV calculated by Vanguard where the FINAL NAV is not yet available. All INTERIM NAV prices will be updated with a FINAL price once it is known. While every effort is made to ensure that the Interim NAV Price is as close as possible to the Final NAV Price, the Interim NAV price cannot be guaranteed.

ESTIMATE - This indicates that the Primary Market was closed from the stated business day and there is an ESTIMATE price available.

FUND CLOSED – This indicates that the Primary Market was closed from the stated business day and there is no ESTIMATE price available. This may be due to the underlying securities being suspended resulting in the primary market closure of a domestic ETF or as a result of other factors as determined by Vanguard.
